Cambodian Ministry at United Baptist Church
The aim of the Cambodian Ministry is to reach the other Cambodians in Spartanburg County and beyond, sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ and minister to them both socially and spiritually.
We remember how far we’ve come, and the joy of living for the glory of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Through God’s providence and grace, many of us shared similar experiences and journey. From 1975 to 1979 with the Khmer Rouge rule over Cambodia, we experienced what living under communism was like in a war-torn country. Around 2 million Cambodians lost their lives due to starvation, torture, or being executed. For many of us in search of safety, we found our way to refugee camps in Thailand. It was within these camps, amidst the uncertainty and despair, that a new chapter began. Missionaries from around the globe visited the refugee camps, sharing the message of hope, love, and redemption embodied in Jesus Christ.
Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." For many of us in the United States that remembered hearing those words of God’s faithful promises, and being profoundly impacted by the powerful message of the Gospel, we came to believe and accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. For those of us that migrated to America, we carried this newfound faith with us. The seeds of faith planted in the refugee camps of Thailand took root in the American soil, spreading across generations.
Recognizing this incredible journey from the horrors of war to the refuge of faith, we began reaching out to the other Cambodians in Spartanburg county in 1993, to share the love of Christ, leading to the baptism of 77 Cambodians over the years. Moreover, the Cambodian Ministry has been actively supporting Cambodians, helping them navigate through their social and economic needs. The Cambodian Ministry is also stepping up doing missionary trips, sending Care Packages to impoverished people in Cambodia, and sharing with them the message of the Gospel to all people in their villages. It's all about showing the love of Jesus Christ in practical ways. Our story is a powerful reminder that even in the toughest times, faith can grow, hope can bloom, and communities can rise stronger.
